Angle of Repose - Wallace Stegner - 01/31/10
Beautifully written - grabbed me from the start and never let up. Stegner has such a way of creating breathtaking descriptions of scenery and situations, and while I occasionally felt he was being a little unfair to his characters, that also is a testament to his ability to make me care so deeply for them. I had some difficulty with the ending, but it still worked, and though the present-day scenes weren't as compelling to me I think they were still necessary - and the author very skillfully threaded the past and the present together, which was, after all, the whole point of the book. Glorious. I listened to the soundtrack to "The Proposition" quite a bit during my reading and it was very very appropriate in tone and feeling. Ah, Complete Experience.
