- The Yiddish Policeman's Union - Michael Chabon - 04/20/10
I really loved "Kavalier & Clay," but this story just didn't suck me in. Part of this could have been from having heard it was amazing before I started it, and part could be because it's written by a Jew about Jews, and likely primarily for Jews (though I looked up a ton of words in a Yiddish dictionary, which was somewhat interesting reading itself), and part of it could be just that it's too long for what it is. The first 200 pages were hard to get through, and by the end I didn't feel like I was piecing together clues (which is the only thing I really enjoy about detective stories); I felt like when I'm watching Law and Order Criminal Intent and Detective Robert Goren tells the bad guy at the end that he found him because he smelled something on the tires that reminded him of a certain kind of tree so he knew it was a botanist who committed the crime. I also am sure there were some story hooks that I missed because of the cultural gap. Chabon does have a wonderful ability to describe little things in perfect and unique ways (fog that "has the translucence of onions cooked in chicken fat" is one of probably a million examples in this book), and there were some amusing conversations here and there, but without ever developing an attachment to the characters or feeling really engaged by the plot, that's kind of all I had to cling to.
