- Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro - 03/30/11
At first I was put off by how the story unfolds because it meanders and the narrative seems to follow a stream of consciousness. In addition to this, I get irritated when characters put on a big show of knowing more than I do, and that's intensified when there's some overarching mystery (I often flip to some random sentence toward the end of a book to see if I can deduce more about what's happening without spoiling the story. I've never told anyone that before.). Anyway, even though the larger arc of the story was clear from the get-go I was still engrossed in reading how it all played out and found it to be a rewarding experience. I particularly enjoyed reading a very intense discussion between several characters, and in the midst of it, a character checking to see if she has bird-shit on her arm. I will probably be thinking about it for awhile. (Not the bird-shit.)
